In questo periodo di pandemia che ha rivoluzionato le nostre vite, la scienza ha contribuito a tutelare in tempi brevissimi la nostra salute creando vaccini per proteggerci dal Covid.
Come sappiamo, però per essere efficaci i vaccini devono essere somministrati almeno al 75% della popolazione mondiale, così da creare immunità di gregge e fermare la diffusione della pandemia. Tuttavia, non tutti si vogliono vaccinare o sono stati ancora vaccinati nel mondo e, pertanto, serve una combinazione di vaccini e farmaci antivirali per fermare anche le maledette varianti.
Mai come ora la scienza merita un clima di fiducia perché l’antivirale viene somministrato unicamente alle persone malate e a coloro che hanno frequentato le stesse durante tutte le fasi dell’infezione.
A tal proposito, trattandosi di materia di sicurezza nazionale, il governo americano ha recentemente stanziato 3.2 miliardi di dollari per lo sviluppo di un antivirale per curare il Covid. Capofila di questi studi scientifici è Pfizer (trovate i dettagli su pfizer.com), ma esistono molte altre società biotecnologiche composte da team di scienziati esperti in materia che stanno cercando di trovare una cura e sono in stretto contatto, per accelerare il processo di sviluppo, con la FDA (Food and Drug Administration).
Tutti spinti dal benessere delle persone, cercando di consegnare alle future generazioni una cura definitiva e, perché no, avere anche un buon ritorno sia di reputazione sia economico del loro importante lavoro.
Per essere più precisa, sono riuscita a parlare di persona qui negli Stati Uniti con uno scienziato di fama mondiale che mi ha spiegato che gli antivirali attuali sono utilizzati con grande successo nelle malattie come epatite C, HIV e il virus dell’Herpes.
Molti antivirali sono efficaci in combinazione di doppia e tripla terapia, soprattutto bloccando specificamente i meccanismi molecolari utilizzati dai virus per replicarsi come parassiti intracellulari obbligati (ossia in grado di crescere, riprodursi, e causare la malattia solo all’interno delle cellule dell’ospite).
Queste molecole di antivirali hanno cambiato totalmente l’approccio della medicina e sono combinate con terapie multiple d’immunizzazione con i vaccini o all’uso di anticorpi terapeutici.
In conclusione, il farmaco che stanno sperimentando gli scienziati in combinazione con altri medicinali ci permetterà di lasciarci alle spalle la paura della pandemia. Se tutto questo si realizzerà in breve tempo potremo abbracciare una nuova normalità e magari tornare a sognare in grande.
