Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians
are better representing the views of everyday Australians,
unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States. 

The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast
host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the
two-party system’.

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe
countered.

‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to
bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.

‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making
both of the main parties re-examine who they are and
what they stand for.

Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how
US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties,
but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states,
while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948

The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of
states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump. 

He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming
cabinet. 

Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under the banner of
that movement – formed by former third-party presidential
candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the
popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes. 

Australia, by contrast, has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes
away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition

This situation is helped by a strong Green party
who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives. 

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative
have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.

This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ fiscal approach of
the centre-right Liberal party.

Zali Steggall became the first Teal independent to achieve
huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.

In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal
seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election. 

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in Teal social media adverts.

They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes
à Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding
to some Teal candidates.

Not all independents are Teals, however. 

There is Dai Lee defeated the former Labor frontbencher and former NSW premier Kristina Keneally in the Sydney seat of Fowler.

And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as a
Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades in federal parliament as the
MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy. 

Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school
kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of –
massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book,
The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’
– and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is
‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated
that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy
on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese
got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot
the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he
was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for
then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night,
just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s
response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about
him the Prime Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with
public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part
in it, the terrible circumstances that they
create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who
is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at
this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and
he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking
upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about,
which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are
struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his
credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part
to get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the book will learn that
this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese. This
book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National,
you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.

I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had
across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with
the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind
of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what
I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every
year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front
row of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think
(the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel
to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and
asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a
very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where
it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted
and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing
your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.

No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these
upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve experienced
the front of the plane, it’s very hard to
go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve
got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid
like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

The Australian government has issued a stern warning to horror fans flocking to cinemas to see the
ultra-violent slasher film Terrifier 3, cautioning audiences about its extreme
content and disturbing themes.

The film, directed by Damien Leone, has drawn huge crowds since it’s release on October
10, as it continues the blood-soaked saga of Art the
Clown with more gruesome, stomach-churning scenes.

The movie has broken box office records as horror enthusiasts are lured in by the film’s reputation for intense violence and shock value.

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport,
Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts has warned Australian audiences to prepare for scenes of graphic
violence, dismemberment and disturbing themes that go well
beyond typical horror fare.

The film includes brutal depictions of murder using a variety of weapons, from chainsaws to axes
and guns, resulting in explicit injury detail and copious amounts of blood.

The warning also highlights that the movie portrays self-harm,
cannibalism, animal cruelty and violence involving
children, pushing the boundaries of what the most
hardened horror fans has seen before.

One of the film’s more controversial moments includes a
scene of implied masturbation coupled with self-harm, along with a shower
scene that hints at sexual activity.

Now, with Terrifier 3, Leone has doubled down on the carnage,
taking the gore to new, unsettling levels.

Despite Australia’s strict film censorship laws, Terrifier 3 was approved for theatrical release with a strong warning attached.

The film’s notoriety has only heightened its appeal to horror fans, who continue to fill cinemas across the
country.

Earlier this month, two people fainted and fled for the exit when it hit a Perth cinema for early previews.

According to multiple eye witness accounts, one young woman badly injured herself after she fell down the
cinema stairs while fleeing the movie theatre.

‘This is going to sound made up and I promise you it’s not,’ Australian horror film critic
Emma Clarke began her review of David Leone’s
controversial new horror-slasher.

The Rotten Tomatoes verified critic said two people fainted
right in front of her during the screening she attended at Innaloo Cinemas in Perth over the weekend.

The first fainted during the opening scene, she said in her film review shared
to YouTube, and the second nearer to the end of the two-house spectacle.

‘Can you tell me… why did two people feint right in front of me during that film?’ she said.

‘Both trying to run down the stairs to get to the bathrooms because they felt so queasy.’

The horror film fanatic said she spoke to both people and tried to assist them because she was seated directly
behind them.

The first was a man, who left with a friend
who came to check on him, and second Australian victim was a young woman.

‘This poor girl gashed her head open as she fell down the stairs, I felt so bad for her.
I went and checked on her afterwards,’ Clarke claimed.

‘She did get help. She was with her friend. It
really shook me up too. It actually took me out of the film
for the moment.’

The reviewer, who has been sharing her thoughts on scary movies for the past four
years, said she has never seen audience members have such a visceral
reaction to a film.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive
rights

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate
has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.

In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot
referendums.

And in this key southwestern state — where
the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by
a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.

In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door
to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while they’re
at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.

To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”

She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland,
a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely
limited.

Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences
for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.

“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told AFP.

– ‘Abortion is murder’ –

As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young people who may be less
likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme
Court against abortion rights.

“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.

But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.

“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.

“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit
exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”

He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during
the Biden-Harris administration.

“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he
said.

“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”

So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the
country illegally — powers normally reserved to
the border police who work for the federal government.

“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

– Mixed impact –

The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering
an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.

Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a
very narrow lead.

Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support
and both appear likely to pass.

So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,”
said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State
University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and
to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.

Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party includes
“a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also
raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but
also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh,
a Republican and an Arizona state senator.

The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening
on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the
border Biden ordered in recent months.

The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite Virgin offering

Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last
year despite it not always being the cheapest route,
according to travel data provided to the government.

While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight, it
also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.

MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded
trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits,
which allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades.

‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians
and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.

‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’

Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be
conducted by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two months left of 2024.

Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.

dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from
the world’s second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due
later in the day to gauge its policy path.

The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after a sharp rally
to a seven-week high last week.

Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips lower than the previous late session close
at 7.066. Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around
which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3
pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.
China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time
since Sept. 13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after
officials on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month,
due to broad dollar strength, but the currency
has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.

China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise
from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the
offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.

“Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists said.

Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures that could help further lift China asset sentiment.

Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if
local equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar, but is headed
for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened
by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.

Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to
drive up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too
much. “We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn
Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.

However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.

Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year
low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building”
in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s
central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,”
said John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.

He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next
week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top
policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.

But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally for
clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions, likely will not be officially announced
until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar after
the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5%
a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury yields below 2%
to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the U.S., and
exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s

Joaquin Phoenix has revealed that he spoke with filmmaker Christopher Nolan about playing Joker which ultimately went to Heath Ledger.

The 50-year-old actor – whose latest flick Joker: Folie À Deux could be streamed now – got candid about potentially playing the supervillain before he actually
portrayed him.

Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast
as he revealed that he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan about portraying Joker over
a decade before.

He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for a number of reasons.
I wasn’t ready then.

‘That’s one of those things sometimes where you go: “Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and
about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut
taken by theaters — though Warner Bros. sources claim the
number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by
anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout
its home viewing and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis
has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning
film was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures, yet
ended up being slammed by critics and failed to

31% and a critic score of 32%.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process
telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do
with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter
Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month. 

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the
end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with
claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say
no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran –
who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut
screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery
merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming
in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing about
genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going
to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA
premiere September 30

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one
could get through to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to
premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying
the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the
film to Venice. 

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener,
Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

Dec 4 (Reuters) – Wall Street’s main indexes climbed on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq
touching record highs driven by gains in technology stocks, while investors awaited comments from U.S.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell later in the day.

Crucial jobs data is due on Friday and investors are
shoring up bets on a third consecutive interest-rate cut
at the central bank’s Dec. 17-18 meeting.

Salesforce provided the biggest boost to the blue-chip Dow on the day, jumping 8.8% to an all-time high after the enterprise cloud company beat Street estimates for
third-quarter revenue and raised the lower end of its annual revenue forecast.

Other cloud companies also jumped, with ServiceNow and Datadog adding 5.6% each.

Information Technology stocks hit a record high, buoyed by gains in megacaps such as Microsoft and Nvidia.

Marvell Technology advanced 21.6% to a record high after the
chipmaker forecast fourth-quarter revenue above analyst estimates, while the broader Semiconductor index rose 1.6%.

“Numbers from technology (Salesforce and Marvell) once again were pretty amazing and it just seems that we can continue to grow and hit these earnings. These numbers continue to give the tech rally legs,” said JJ Kinahan, CEO at IG Group North America.

showed a modest increase in November, while annual wages for workers staying in their jobs edged higher for the first time in 25 months.

Separately, a survey from the Institute for Supply Management showed U.S.
services sector activity slowed in November after logging big gains in recent months, while the final reading of the S&P services survey

At 11:31 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 235.16 points, or 0.53%, to 44,940.69, the S&P 500 gained 22.58 points,
or 0.37%, to 6,072.46, and the Nasdaq Composite added 171.83 points, or 0.88%,
to 19,652.74.

The CBOE Market Volatility Index, Wall Street’s fear gauge, briefly dipped below 13 points for the first time since
July.

The Fed’s Beige Book, the central bank’s U.S. economic activity survey report, is scheduled
for release at 2:00 p.m. ET.

St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem spoke on the day, joining other Fed officials this week in signaling support for further
rate cuts, but none pushed strongly for or against another reduction.

LONDON, Dec 6 (Reuters) – British American Tobacco’s admission that its U.S.
cigarette brands will be worthless within decades has ramped up pressure on the company to prove it
can better compete in alternatives like vapes.

Earlier on Wednesday, BAT put a 30-year lifetime on some
U.S. tobacco brands’ value, taking a $31.5 billion noncash impairment.
The move marked the first time a tobacco company has acknowledged that hugely profitable brands have no
economic future.

While the maker of Lucky Strike and Dunhill cigarettes has been investing in alternatives like vapes to counter the decline,
it lags behind rival Philip Morris International in the transition, leaving its shares trading at
a vastly lower price-earnings ratio than those of its main competitor.

“What really matters to the stock is how quickly you can replace (cigarettes) with alternative routes for consumers to get a nicotine hit and how profitable that will be,” said Chris Beckett, head of equity research at
Quilter Cheviot, a BAT shareholder.

BAT says its newer products will break even years ahead of schedule.
Its vape business is growing, along with its oral nicotine product,
Velo, the market leader in Europe.

However, it faces key challenges.

In the critical U.S. market, authorities have rejected its application to sell some key vape products and illegal disposable vapes have
flooded the market, denting sales of those products BAT
is able to market.

The company is also under pressure from investors to catch up with
rival PMI in another alternative, heated tobacco.

Heated tobacco devices heat up sticks of tobacco resembling cigarettes but do not burn them in an attempt to avoid harmful chemicals released during combustion.

PMI’s IQOS product dominates this category with some 70% market share.

BAT’s rival proposition, meanwhile, lost market share
in 2023 in terms of volume, to stand at 18.2% in key markets, the company said,
adding that its volume and revenue growth decelerated in the second
half in a “disappointing” performance.

LATE ENTRY

It is harder for companies to generate profit from vapes due to intense competition, said Orwa Mohamad, analyst at
Third Bridge. BAT’s late entry into heated tobacco had left it at a disadvantage and an aggressive pricing
strategy aimed at winning share from IQOS had yet to bear fruit, he
added.

Where PMI expects two-thirds of its net revenue to come from smoke-free products
by 2030, BAT’s ambition, announced on Wednesday, envisages only 50% of
its revenue from new categories by 2035.

Its slower progress versus PMI means BAT’s shares have
gained little value so far from its commitment to transition, trading at a price-earnings ratio only slightly above that of rival Imperial Brands.

Unlike the others, Imperial has in recent years pulled
back from heavy investments in new products to refocus on its
traditional cigarette business, leaving a question mark over its longer-term sustainability.

At the same time, BAT is now falling short of Imperial on something investors have long expected from highly cash-generative
cigarette businesses: healthy dividends and
share buybacks.

Cigarette businesses are so profitable they do not need to last beyond 30 years to make

The 50-year-old actor – whose latest flick Joker: Folie À Deux could be
streamed now – got candid about potentially playing the
supervillain before he actually portrayed him.

Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as he revealed that
he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan about portraying Joker over a decade before.

He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for a number of reasons.
I wasn’t ready then.

‘That’s one of those things sometimes where you go: “Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. There’s another person that’s going to do something that’s like, I can’t imagine what it would be if we didn’t have Heath Ledger‘s performance in that film.”‘

Joaquin continued: ‘I don’t know whether Christopher Nolan was coming to
me saying, “You are definitely the person.” 

‘I can’t remember the context of how we met. But I know that we met, and my
feeling was, “I shouldn’t do this.” But maybe he also was like, “You’re not the guy.” I couldn’t say.’

Heath died in a New York City apartment on January 22,

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring
in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included
with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to
earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally
after two weeks of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4
million globally after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase –
with an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the
film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month. 

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally
ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes
maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed
up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears
at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment
to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca,
Chairperson of Warner Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’
to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took
control of DC two months before production began on Joker
2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips
fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips
shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was
‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel
at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently shared:
‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and
pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.

the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere
the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back –
with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported
the decision to bring the film to Venice. 

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine
Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.
