Women, Innovation and Human Capital

Rome, June 17, 2011 – The XXIII edition of the Bellisario Award was dedicated to “Women Innovation and Human Capital”, with a special look at the world of young talents.

Within the celebrations of 150 years of the Italy unification, the Bellisario Award was recorded by the cameras of Rai Due under the direction of Massimiliano Ossini, and aired on June 19 in the late evening. Five Golden Apples and an International Award weredelivered to the 2011   “excellent” women of our country.  As per tradition, the Golden Bud was awarded by the youth section of the Marisa Bellisario Foundation; also three recent Nuclear Energy Engineering graduates were awarded this year, together with an entrepreneur who, in the management of her company, distinguished herself for enhancing the female talent.

A Committee chaired by Lella Golfo, President of the Marisa Bellisario Foundation, and composed of leading figures in the economic, institutional and cultural world declared the winners.

According to the words of the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, who in his year-end speech stressed that “if we do not open to our children new employment opportunities and offer a decent life, if we do not create new opportunities for social success, the game of the future is lost not only for them, but for the whole of Italy”, in a time when, according to the latest study of Censis, in Italy more than 30% of graduates between the ages of 25 and 34 years are not working and 35% of them have not reached full autonomy, this year the Marisa Bellisario Foundation wanted to give a strong signal by dedicating a special award to young talent, women under 35 years of age who have distinguished themselves for different merits.

“The words of our forward-looking President Giorgio Napolitano showed us the way”  said Lella Golfo  “and we decided to dedicate the XXIII edition of the Marisa Bellisario Award to young talents. “Women Innovation and Human Capital” is our cry of hope and confidence, our contribution to meritocracy and the ‘red thread’ that can turn the anniversary of 150 years of the Unification of Italy into an extraordinary opportunity to reflect, to find unity of objectives and actions, for a new pact between generations”.

For the section entitled Research, the youngest and talented Female Researchers in 13 main areas were awarded. In the section dedicated to  Made in Italy, the award went to nine women, including artists, photographers, actors of cinema and theater, fashion designers, Stylists, and Entrepreneurs in the wine and hospitality sector, all of who have enhanced with their actions the image of Italy abroad.

Ten young women of the Armed Forces who, every day, with their determination and commitment, contribute to the defense of the country have been awarded, as well as nine athletes who have given glory to Italy deserving the gold and silver medals.

Like every year, with the support of the Presidency of the Republic, a further guarantee of the very high profile of the Bellisario Award, there is the creation of a committee composed by the Honorable President of the Foundation Marisa Bellisario, the Hon. Lella Golfo, Marina Berlusconi, Paolo Bertoluzzo, Diana Bracco, Antonio Catricalà, Nicola Ciniero, Fulvio Conti, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, Ferruccio de Bortoli, Diego Della Valle, Sergio Dompé, Paolo Garimberti, Cesare Geronzi, Patrizia Grieco, Pier Francesco Guarguaglini, Rita Levi Montalcini, Emma Marcegaglia, Paolo Mieli, Letizia Moratti, Roberto Napoletano, Corrado Passera, Massimo Sarmi, Paolo Scaroni, Donatella Treu and Umberto Veronesi.
